Northwest Samar State University – San Jorge Campus (NwSSU–SJC) successfully conducted its two-day Institutional Research and Extension In-House Review on March 25–26, 2026, at the Audio Visual Hall, gathering all faculty in a shared pursuit of academic excellence, innovation, and community impact.

Anchored on strengthening the university’s research culture, the activity served as a platform for faculty and staff to present scholarly works and extension initiatives designed to address local needs and contribute to sustainable development.

A distinguished panel of evaluators, composed of experts in research, innovation, and extension; Mr. Felix John M. Refamonte, Assistant Professor III and University Researcher for Science and Technology; Mr. Eduardo G. Espejon Jr. RPF., MSc, RIE Director; Engr. Renell Jay G. Villaluz, Head of Innovation; and Ms. Jayrose P. Ortiz, Head of Extension Services of San Jorge Campus, facilitated the assessment of presented studies, offering critical insights and recommendations to enhance their relevance and impact.

Across the two-day program, presenters showcased a wide range of studies and projects. These included initiatives on youth empowerment and governance, coconut-based livelihood development, and technological innovations such as the Suman Molder designed to support local producers. Research presentations further explored topics like food innovation using bamboo shoots, sensory-based learning approaches in education, and the application of artificial intelligence in forest disturbance monitoring.

Complementing these were community-oriented and sustainability-driven studies, including ecotourism management assessments, aquaponics-based agricultural systems, and agricultural research focusing on purple yam and pechay production under optimized and organic conditions. Extension proposals, such as “Ube for Life,” highlighted integrated approaches to agroforestry, bioeconomy, and value chain development for livelihood sustainability.

Throughout the sessions, evaluators conducted thorough reviews, ensuring that each study met academic standards while maintaining practical significance. The program also recognized the contributions of presenters and evaluators through a certificate awarding ceremony.

In her closing message, Campus Dean Dr. Elvie T. Bejar reflected on the event as more than a venue for presenting research, describing it as a celebration of collaboration, innovation, and the collective commitment of the academic community to excellence.
